You know what caught me off guard about the Holiday Inn Munich South? It actually doesn’t feel like your typical chain hotel at all. I mean, sure, you’ve got that reliable IHG consistency thing going on, but there’s something genuinely welcoming about this place that surprised me on my first visit.

The location is honestly pretty smart if you know Munich at all – you’re south of the city center, which sounds far but really isn’t. What I love about staying here is that you avoid all the tourist chaos around Marienplatz, but you can still hop on public transport and be in the thick of things in about 20 minutes. The U-Bahn connections are solid, and honestly, after a long day of sightseeing or meetings, coming back to this quieter part of town feels like a relief. Plus (and this matters if you’re driving), parking here isn’t the nightmare it can be closer to the center – Munich’s parking situation is… well, let’s just say it builds character.

The rooms themselves hit that sweet spot between comfortable and functional. Nothing too fancy, but the beds are genuinely good – I’m talking proper sleep quality here, not just hotel marketing speak. The bathrooms are modern without trying too hard, and you know what I really appreciate? The soundproofing actually works. I’ve stayed at some places where you hear every conversation in the hallway, but this place lets you decompress properly. The staff seems to get that balance between being helpful and not hovering, which honestly makes such a difference when you’re trying to navigate a foreign city or just need some downtime. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward too – none of that overly complicated key card dance some places put you through.

What really sells me on this spot, though, is how it works for different types of trips. I’ve recommended it to friends doing the full tourist circuit, and they loved having a calm base to return to. But I’ve also stayed here for work stuff, and the business amenities actually function the way they’re supposed to – reliable wifi, decent workspace setup, that kind of thing. The breakfast is solid too, not groundbreaking but definitely the kind that sets you up properly for the day without feeling rushed or underwhelming.

You’re not getting luxury resort vibes, but you’re getting something more valuable – a place that just works well and doesn’t create any unnecessary stress during your trip. In Munich, where accommodation can get pricey and touristy areas can feel overwhelming, having a reliable spot like this in a more residential area actually feels like finding a bit of local life while still having all the conveniences you need.

  The property is well located close to the train station, about 20 minutes ride into the city centre. Rooms were decent sized and serviced every morning. Reception is open 24hrs which made checking in off a late flight nice and easy.

  What could be improved: We booked a triple room and was only given amenities for 2 people (towels, mugs, glasses etc). We went down to reception to sort this and was told housekeeping will be informed. Only when I told them that i'd like to shower this morning they went into the back for some towels. I was told to get the missing mug/glass from the restaurant myself rather than reception getting this…this confused the waiters who told me I couldn't take anything with me. Clearly nothing was communicated after this as we were still given 2 of everything each day the room was cleaned. It's annoying that such a simple task (comminication) causes this much of a issue.
