You know what caught me off guard about Das Nikolai Hotel? It’s one of those places that doesn’t try too hard to impress you, but somehow ends up doing exactly that. I mean, sure, it’s got that 4-star polish you’d expect, but there’s something refreshingly unpretentious about the whole vibe. The lobby has this understated elegance – think clean lines and natural materials without all the marble-heavy drama you see at some hotels. Check-in was actually pleasant (rare these days), and the staff seemed genuinely interested in making sure I knew my way around the neighborhood rather than just handing over a key card with a forced smile.

The rooms hit that sweet spot between modern comfort and character – honestly, I’ve stayed at plenty of places with higher star ratings that felt way more sterile. The bed was properly comfortable, not just expensive-looking, and I appreciated little touches like having enough outlets near the desk and blackout curtains that actually worked. What really sold me though was how quiet everything was. You know how some hotels you can hear every conversation in the hallway? Not here. I’m a light sleeper, so this matters more to me than fancy amenities I’ll never use. The bathroom was well-designed too – good water pressure and they didn’t go overboard with those tiny boutique toiletries that run out after one shower.

Here’s the thing about Das Nikolai – it feels like the kind of place locals would actually recommend to their visiting friends, not just tourists passing through. The breakfast was solid (though I’d skip it if you’re in a rush – they clearly prioritize quality over speed), and the whole operation just runs smoothly without being overly fussy about it. With an 8.3 rating, it’s obviously doing something right, and after staying there I get why people keep coming back. It’s not going to blow your mind with over-the-top luxury, but if you want a genuinely comfortable base that doesn’t feel like every other chain hotel, this place delivers. Plus – and this might sound weird – but it actually smelled good throughout, like they use real cleaning products instead of just masking everything with artificial air freshener.

  The staff were amazing during our entire stay … they really made our stay enjoyable. Also the location of the property was great … though it was close to lots of shops and restaurants it was tacked in a small neighborhood that was quiet.
  
  What could be improved: Something that needs to be addressed right away is the showers. The shower head holder is far from where you are standing and unless you do some acrobatics or hold the shower head over you head you can get to water easily.
