You know what struck me first about The Charles? It’s one of those places where you immediately feel like you’ve stumbled onto something special, but not in that over-the-top, trying-too-hard way that some five-star places do. I mean, it’s definitely luxurious – this is Rocco Forte we’re talking about – but there’s something refreshingly understated about it. The lobby has this warm, residential feel that actually makes you want to linger with a coffee rather than rush straight to your room.

The rooms are honestly gorgeous, with these beautiful custom furnishings that feel more like a well-appointed private home than a hotel. What I really appreciated was the attention to the little things – proper reading lights (you’d be surprised how many fancy hotels mess this up), blackout curtains that actually block light, and a bathroom setup that makes sense for real people, not just Instagram photos. The beds are incredibly comfortable, though I’ll warn you that the pillows are quite firm, which some people love and others… well, you might want to ask for alternatives at check-in if you prefer something softer.

Service-wise, the staff really knows their stuff without being stuffy about it. They’re the kind of people who remember your coffee order and can give you actual local recommendations beyond the usual tourist spots. I was impressed by how smoothly everything ran – check-in was seamless, housekeeping was thorough but unobtrusive, and when I had a minor issue with the air conditioning, someone was up to fix it within minutes. The concierge team is particularly good if you’re looking for restaurant reservations or want insider tips on what’s worth seeing. Honestly, with a rating of 9 out of 10, you can tell this place has figured out how to consistently deliver without the pretension that sometimes comes with hotels at this level. It’s the sort of place where you can dress up or down and feel equally comfortable, which – let’s be real – is exactly what you want when you’re traveling.

  its the 1st time ive stopped at the Charles and I thought it was lovely. the room airy spacious, immaculately clean. all staff were happy and very courteous.
  
  What could be improved: I did think the breakfast was a little limited compared to other hotels I've previously stopped at, but nothing too off-putting. it was great to be able to read a newspaper in English.
