Overview

You know what? I wasn’t expecting much from Motel One München-Haidhausen when I first walked up to it – I mean, it’s got “motel” right there in the name. But honestly, this place completely changed my mind about what a three-star hotel can be. The lobby hit me right away with this sleek, almost minimalist vibe that felt more like a boutique hotel than anything budget-friendly. There’s this warm lighting and contemporary furniture that actually makes you want to hang out there instead of just rushing through to your room.

The Haidhausen location is honestly perfect if you want to feel like you’re staying somewhere locals actually live, not just tourist central. You’re walking distance from the Gasteig cultural center (which locals will tell you has some of the best views of the old town from its upper floors), and the whole neighborhood has this relaxed, residential feel during the day that transforms into something more lively in the evenings. I found myself wandering down to the Isar river pretty much every morning – it’s maybe a ten-minute walk and there’s something really peaceful about starting your day along the water before the city fully wakes up. The rooms themselves are surprisingly well thought out for the price point. Sure, they’re compact, but everything has its place and the bed was actually comfortable (which, let’s be honest, isn’t always a given with European hotels in this price range). The shower had proper water pressure – I know that sounds silly to mention, but after a day of walking around Munich, you really appreciate it.

What really impressed me was how the staff seemed to know their stuff about the area. When I asked about getting to Marienplatz without dealing with tourist crowds, the front desk guy suggested taking the S-Bahn from Rosenheimer Platz instead of the more obvious route, and he was absolutely right. The 8.7 rating makes complete sense once you’ve stayed here – it’s not trying to be fancy, but it nails all the basics and then some. The only minor thing I’d mention is that rooms facing the street can get a bit of traffic noise in the early morning, but honestly, that’s pretty standard for any city hotel. If you’re the type who needs absolute silence, just ask for a room on the courtyard side when you check in. I’d definitely stay here again, especially if I wanted to explore Munich beyond just the main tourist spots.

Good value for money: the room itself was beautiful, and the staff kept my bag and let me work in the (very nice) lobby while waiting for my plane. I could even order coffees!

Room was well sound-proofed - very quiet despite the central location; good, comfortable bed; spotlessly clean bathroom; pleasant staff at reception.

What could be improved: Small room. No tea/coffee-making facilities.

Hotel fabulous, staff friendly and helpful, breakfast plentiful and tasty, rooms very clean. Altogether an excellent hotel. Would stay in a Motel One again.

What could be improved: Loved everything. No negatives.
