You know what? I wasn’t expecting much from the Mercure München Altstadt when I first walked up to it, but this place actually surprised me in the best way. It’s one of those 3-star hotels that punches way above its weight class – honestly, the 8.5 rating makes total sense once you’ve stayed there.

The location is what really got me excited. I mean, when they say “Altstadt,” they’re not kidding around – you’re literally in Munich’s old town, which means you can stumble back to your room after exploring the Viktualienmarkt or hitting up one of the beer gardens without dealing with the S-Bahn or expensive taxis. The morning I was there, I could hear the church bells from nearby Peterskirche, and there’s something pretty magical about that when you’re having your coffee. The streets around here get busy during the day (it’s tourist central, after all), but evenings actually quiet down more than you’d expect since most of the action moves to other neighborhoods.

What impressed me most was how the staff seemed to actually know Munich – not just the obvious tourist spots, but like, where to find good schnitzel that won’t cost you 20 euros, or which U-Bahn entrance to use when Marienplatz gets crazy during Oktoberfest season. The rooms themselves are clean and well-maintained, nothing fancy but everything works properly, which honestly is more than I can say for some pricier places I’ve stayed. The beds are firm in that European way that I’ve learned to appreciate, and the windows actually block out most of the street noise, which is crucial when you’re this close to the pedestrian zones.

Check-in was smooth – they had my reservation ready and didn’t try to upsell me on room upgrades or breakfast packages, which I always appreciate. The elevator’s a bit slow, but hey, it’s an older building and that comes with the territory when you want authentic old town vibes. One thing that caught me off guard was how much natural light the rooms get; I was worried about being in a cramped, dark space, but the windows are actually pretty generous. Oh, and if you’re driving, ask about parking when you book – street parking around here is basically impossible, but they can point you toward some decent garages within walking distance that won’t completely destroy your budget. Honestly, for the price point and location, this place delivers exactly what it promises without any pretense, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need when you just want a solid base for exploring Munich.

  Very comfortable room, quiet and splendid breakfast. Not far from the hauptbahnhof, about 10 minutes walk. Complimentary refreshments in the fridge, chocolates etc was a nice touching after a long journey by train.
