Hotel Description
Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of fancy hotels in Munich, but the Mandarin Oriental actually surprised me – and not just because it’s tucked away in a spot where you wouldn’t expect to find such a sleek operation. The building itself is this interesting mix of classic Bavarian architecture with seriously modern interiors, which honestly works better than it sounds on paper.
What really got me was how quiet it is inside, even though you’re basically in the heart of the city. I mean, Munich can get pretty lively (especially during any season that ends in “fest”), but once you’re in the lobby, there’s this almost zen-like calm that follows you up to the rooms. The staff – and I’m usually pretty skeptical about overly polished service – actually seemed to know their stuff without being pushy about it. They pointed me toward this little café around the corner that I never would’ve found otherwise, the kind of local spot that doesn’t even have a proper sign.
The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from a five-star place, but there are these thoughtful touches that show someone was actually paying attention. The bathroom setup is particularly well done – good water pressure, which you can’t always count on in European hotels, and the lighting actually works for both getting ready and winding down. I stayed during a busy conference week, and while the hotel was clearly full, it never felt crowded or chaotic. The elevators were fast, the hallways stayed quiet, and somehow they managed the breakfast service without those annoying long waits you usually get at popular places.
Honestly, the 8.0 rating makes sense to me. It’s not perfect – the minibar prices made me laugh out loud, and the gym is smaller than what you might expect for this caliber of hotel. But there’s something about the whole experience that feels more genuine than a lot of the big chain luxury properties. Maybe it’s because they’re not trying so hard to impress you with flashy amenities and instead focus on just… working really well. You know what I mean? Like, the concierge actually gave me realistic walking times to different parts of the city instead of the usual optimistic estimates, and when I needed a late checkout, they just made it happen without the whole song and dance.
If you’re the type who wants to be right in the Marienplatz chaos, this might feel a bit removed, but I actually liked having that buffer. You can still walk to all the main attractions pretty easily, but you’re not dealing with the tourist crowds right outside your door. Plus, being slightly off the main drag means you’re closer to some of the neighborhoods where actual Müncheners hang out, which is worth something if you want to get beyond the guidebook version of the city.

What could be improved: Breakfast is good but could have more varietyNada from Saudi Arabia – 15 January 2025 (8/10)
Location and staff
What could be improved: The food is not good inside the room service and also the breakfastVv from Australia – 6 January 2025 (9/10)
The hotel staff was helpful and friendly and the rooms were well appointed and very clean. The location is in the heart of the old city so great for exploring if you are a first time visitor to Munich like we were.
What could be improved: The service at the signature Japanese restaurant was poor. No atmosphere, no engagement with customers, some also hotel guests. Like so often, these days with staff, it becomes more about individuals completing their tasks/jobs with minimal etiquette and missing the big picture which is to give your customers a great experience so they return. The food was good but overpriced.Huston from United Kingdom – 8 December 2024 (8/10)
The staff was excellent. Raphaella, checking us in and Vincenzo and his Italian coworker at the front door were extremely helpful and solicitous.
What could be improved: Sunday breakfast was fairly chaotic.Gadi from Israel – 16 September 2024 (8/10)

Amazing room and bathroom, and breakfast buffet was wonderful. Room service was great, and the team was very friendly.
What could be improved: There's a new construction right in front of the hotel – which of course is not their fault.Tina from Slovenia – 25 June 2024 (8/10)
