So here’s the thing about InselMühle – it’s tucked away in Allach-Untermenzing, which honestly most tourists have never heard of, but that’s exactly why I liked it. You’re about 20 minutes from Munich’s center by S-Bahn, but you get this completely different vibe. The hotel sits on Von-Kahr-Strasse, and when I first walked up, I was struck by how quiet it was. I mean, you can actually hear birds in the morning instead of traffic, which is pretty rare for a city hotel.

The building itself has this interesting industrial-meets-cozy thing going on – hence the “Mühle” (mill) in the name, I suppose. Inside, they’ve done something clever with the space that feels both modern and warm. My room was larger than I expected for a 4-star place, and honestly, the bed was one of those where you actually sleep through the night without tossing around. The bathroom had this great rainfall shower that actually had decent water pressure (you know how hit-or-miss that can be in European hotels). What I really appreciated was the little sitting area by the window – perfect for morning coffee while planning the day, or just decompressing after walking around Munich all afternoon.

Staff-wise, they really knew their stuff. The front desk guy – I think his name was Thomas – gave me the best directions to get to Marienplatz without dealing with the tourist crowds, and he was spot-on about which S-Bahn lines to avoid during rush hour. Breakfast was actually good (not just “hotel breakfast good”) with proper local breads and this amazing selection of cold cuts and cheeses. I particularly loved that they had real butter, not those little packets. Parking was surprisingly easy too – they have their own lot, which saved me from circling the neighborhood looking for street spots.

The neighborhood grows on you quickly. There’s a decent bakery about a 5-minute walk away, and if you’re into beer gardens (and really, you should be if you’re in Munich), there’s a lovely local spot that barely sees any tourists. The Würm river runs nearby, and I stumbled across some nice walking paths that locals use for jogging – perfect for working off all that Bavarian food. You’re also surprisingly close to Nymphenburg Palace if you want to do the tourist thing, but without staying in the thick of it all.

Look, it’s not the fanciest place you’ll ever stay, and if you need to be stumbling-distance from the Hofbräuhaus every night, this isn’t your spot. But if you want a genuinely comfortable base that feels more like staying in Munich than staying in Tourist Munich, InselMühle really delivers. The 8.7 rating makes sense – it’s the kind of place that does the fundamentals really well without trying too hard to impress you with gimmicks. Plus, you’ll probably sleep better here than you would right in the city center, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Hotel in Munich booking should be done early, especially during Oktoberfest when the city hosts the world’s largest beer festival and cultural celebration.

  The room was large, tastefully decorated and very comfortable for our stay. The hotel was lovely and quiet to stay in for our visit to Munich. Whilst the hotel is not in the city centre, we were easily able to walk to a nearby train stop. We enjoyed the restaurant downstairs.

  Only 4km from Pasing Station, with good transport options like the S-bahn and bus connection to the city center. We arrived by car and it was great to have free parking on the compound. The room we got has a rustic wooden decor, was of a decent size with windows opening to the water mill outside. The bed is comfortable. The bathroom is modern with plenty of hot water. There is heating but no air conditioning. If you like a cooler temperature to sleep, especially in the summer you will need to open the window and bear with the sound of the water rushing from the water mill. We did leave the window open and it was fine for us. The staff are all very polite and helpful. The restaurant serves very delicious food!
