Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Hotel Grünwald, you immediately get that feeling of stumbling onto something locals have been keeping to themselves. It’s tucked away on Altostraße in Munich’s Aubing district — honestly, I almost missed it the first time because it sits so naturally in this quiet residential neighborhood. The three-star property has this understated charm that grows on you, especially when you realize how much thought has gone into making guests comfortable without all the flashy extras you don’t really need anyway. This is the kind of place where authenticity matters more than pretense.
Location & Getting Around
Here’s what I love about this spot — you’re actually in Munich, not some tourist bubble, but you can still reach the city center easily enough when you want to. The Aubing-Lochhausen-Langwied area feels refreshingly authentic, with tree-lined streets and that residential vibe that lets you see how Munich locals actually live. Couples seem to really appreciate this balance (they rate the location 8.6, which makes sense), and there’s free private parking right at the hotel, which honestly saves you a headache if you’re driving in Bavaria. The neighborhood offers genuine local character.
The Rooms
You know what surprised me most? The beds are genuinely fantastic — like, the kind where you actually sleep through the night instead of tossing around. Recent guests have been raving about how comfortable they are, and I get it. The rooms themselves have that clean, no-nonsense German efficiency going for them, with enough space to spread out your stuff without feeling cramped. Nothing overly fancy, but everything works exactly as it should, which is sometimes more valuable than all the bells and whistles. Comfort is clearly a priority here.
Breakfast Experience
The breakfast setup here is one of those pleasant surprises that sets the tone for your whole day. They’ve got a proper buffet spread with continental options, plus they actually cater to vegetarians (not just an afterthought — real options). I mean, starting your morning with decent coffee and fresh bread while planning your Munich adventures — it’s simple but it works. The dining area has this relaxed atmosphere where you can take your time instead of feeling rushed through some assembly line. Quality matters in the details.
Why Guests Love It
What really strikes me about Hotel Grünwald is how it nails the fundamentals without trying to be something it’s not. Recent guests have rated the location 8.9, which tells you everything about how well-positioned this place is for exploring Munich while having a peaceful base to return to. It’s the kind of hotel where you sleep well, eat well, and feel like you’ve discovered a little corner of the city that most tourists never see — and sometimes that’s exactly what makes a trip memorable. The upscale attention to comfort and authenticity shines through.
Hotels near me in Munich offer convenient access to the old town, where guests can easily walk to Neues Rathaus, Viktualienmarkt, and traditional beer gardens.

Guest Reviews
Everything went well from checkin to check out, Stayed here several times now and will definitely come again next year
Everything was very well, the welcoming owner, the staff and the lodging conditions. Quiet neighborhood, pleasant to walk around. Daily room service was a plus. The owners are sensitives to protect the environment. Very nice yard with tables an umbrellas. They have even a room with a table near the lobby where you could stay and eat if you need to. Very good breakfast.
This was my first time at Hotel Gruenwald, I chose it as it is close to an S-Bahn station and only a short journey into central Munich. The hotel was bigger than I expected but felt cosy is family run and has a great ambience. My room was a good size and very comfortable.
I very much enjoyed the breakfast provided, the choice of rolls and cold buffet, The breakfast staff also took an order to cook a hot breakfast. The scrambled eggs and Speck were delicious. .
I will definitely stay there again on my next trip to Munich.
What could be improved: Nothing major, I would have preferred a different pillow but for 3 nights it was acceptable.
We had a triple room and it was excellent with the 3rd fold out large couch in a seperate area. Great value for money in Munich and close to transport. Great value breakfast and very friendly staff love the family type atmosphere.
What could be improved: Not much, it could have been closer to the city but that would have increased the price so nothing to mention.
It was perfect.
Very clean, comfortable room. Tasty breakfast. VERY helpful staff. I lost my phone at Oktoberfest and they were extremely helpful in obtaining the information that I needed to retrieve it by allowing my to use the front desk computer and phone.
What could be improved: Can't think of anything.
Everything went perfectly. Nice, quiet neighborhood, shops (bakery, pharmacy, bar/restaurants, banks). all within a 2-4 minute walk. Breakfast was great. Staff very friendly and helpful. The place is spotless clean :). The courtyard is great to just sit and relax with a drink on a nice day
What could be improved: Can't think of anything. There was nothing that I did not like
We stayed here 8 yrs ago for our first trip to Munich. Nice quiet location, easy walking distance to the trains that will take you to city center or Oktoberfest. Great breakfast too. We highly recommend and we will stay here again when in the Munich area.
What could be improved: Nothing
