Hotel Carlton Munich Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Hotel Carlton Munich, you immediately get that classic European hotel vibe — nothing flashy, but there’s something reassuring about the traditional setup. The lobby has this old-school charm that feels authentically German rather than trying too hard to impress. It’s a three-star property, and honestly, they seem to know exactly what that means and deliver on it without pretending to be something they’re not.
Location & Neighborhood
The Maxvorstadt location is actually brilliant — I mean, you’re right in the heart of Munich without being stuck in the touristy chaos around Marienplatz. Fürstenstrasse puts you within walking distance of the university area, which gives the whole neighborhood this vibrant, intellectual energy. You know what’s great? Couples absolutely love it here (they rate the location nearly 9 out of 10), and I can see why — there are cozy cafes and sauna spots tucked into side streets that you’d never find unless you were staying right in this area.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in was compact but thoughtfully arranged — typical for Munich, where space is at a premium. Everything worked properly, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how often that’s not the case. The beds are comfortable enough, and there’s decent storage space if you’re not traveling with half your wardrobe. The bathroom was clean and functional, though don’t expect a spa experience — this is about solid comfort rather than indulgence.
Breakfast & Dining
Here’s where they really surprised me — the breakfast spread is genuinely impressive for a three-star place. They’ve got vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options that actually look appetizing (not just sad afterthoughts), plus a proper buffet with local specialties. I watched them accommodate dietary restrictions without making anyone feel like they were causing trouble. There isn’t a full restaurant on-site, but honestly, with Munich’s incredible food scene right outside your door, that’s hardly a problem.
Why It Works
What I appreciate most about Hotel Carlton Munich is that it doesn’t oversell itself — it’s a solid, reliable base for exploring the city. The staff knows the neighborhood well and can point you toward hidden gems that aren’t in guidebooks. Recent guests consistently rate the location over 9 out of 10, and after spending time here, I get it. You’re close enough to walk to major attractions but far enough from the crowds to feel like you’re experiencing the real Munich. For the price point, it delivers exactly what you need without any unnecessary frills.

I liked that it was in an old building and kept the old-style bathroom tiles. You can open the double windows; the room was spacious. Wonderful local hotel.
What could be improved: The air freshener in the hallway was too strong.Nermin from Germany – 26 February 2025 (7/10)

Extremely clean, with delicious breakfasts, very good location.
Anastasia from Bulgaria – 8 January 2025 (9/10)
The hotel is within short walking distance to the city center. Quite a large and spacious room, the building has high ceilings and large windows. During our visit a breakfast was not offered, however, they gave a kettle upon request. There is a very nice cafe 30 m away where you can have breakfast.
To get parking, you need to write to the hotel in advance so that they can issue a permit for parking on the nearby streets. It is quite possible to find a place to park.
The staff is very friendly.
What could be improved: The furniture may not be the most modern, but it is decent and in a good condition.
However, our fridge looked dead and we kept our medicine between the window shutters as it was cold outside. So we didn't bother the staff about the non-working fridge.Peter from Sweden – 2 November 2024 (9/10)
Really nice and cozy hotel. I traveled with wife and two kids. Its a bit rough around the edges, but is very well kept. Super nice personell. The area is also very nice, close to altstadt and the Ubahn at odeonsplatz

What could be improved: Mirror in bathroom a bit too high.Miroslava from United States – 26 September 2024 (8/10)
Personal were very helpful and friendly.
What could be improved: There was not possible to charge a phone near a bad.
