Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about Hotel Am Markt? It’s tucked right into this corner on Heiliggeiststraße where you can actually feel Munich’s old soul – I mean, you’re literally steps from the Heilig-Geist-Kirche, and honestly, hearing those church bells in the morning beats any alarm clock. The building itself has that slightly weathered Bavarian charm that three-star places in Munich’s Altstadt tend to have, but here’s the thing – they’ve clearly put thought into keeping it comfortable without trying to be something it’s not. The lobby’s compact but welcoming, with wood accents that feel authentic rather than themed, and the staff actually seems to know the neighborhood (which, trust me, isn’t always a given in touristy areas).

What really won me over was how genuinely central this place is without the chaos you’d expect. Sure, you’re a five-minute walk from Marienplatz – and I timed it – but Heiliggeiststraße itself stays relatively quiet, especially in the evenings when the day-trippers head back to their tour buses. The rooms are what you’d call efficiently designed; nothing fancy, but the beds are solid and the bathrooms work properly (honestly, after some of the “charming” places I’ve stayed in old European cities, functional plumbing feels like luxury). I appreciated that they didn’t try to cram in unnecessary amenities – instead, they focused on getting the basics right. The windows actually open, which is perfect for those mild Munich evenings, and the Wi-Fi reaches everywhere, including that little breakfast area where you can grab coffee and rolls in the morning while watching locals hurry to work along the cobblestones.

Here’s what sealed it for me though – you’re positioned perfectly to experience Munich like someone who actually lives here. Walk left toward Tal and you hit the real local spots where Müncheners grab their morning coffee, not the tourist traps around the Glockenspiel. Walk right and you’re at the Viktualienmarkt before the crowds arrive, which honestly is the only way to experience that place properly. The hotel sits in this sweet spot where you can stumble home from a late dinner in the Altstadt without hunting for taxis or figuring out the U-Bahn schedule, but you’re also close enough to Isartor that getting to other parts of the city is actually simple. I mean, for a three-star place with an 8.2 rating, Hotel Am Markt delivers exactly what it promises – a clean, comfortable base in one of Munich’s most walkable neighborhoods, run by people who seem to understand that sometimes the best luxury is just being in the right place without the fuss.

Reviews

  • Very convenient location! – Nicole from Canada – August 3, 2025 (8/10)

The property was very close to the old town area so was convenient to be able to walk around. There was also a market right beside the property.

What could be improved: The rooms are very tiny and the beds are also quite small. Was very clean but not very modern. Make sure you bring an adapter as there are only wall plug ins and no usb or anything like that. The gentleman at the front desk was very helpful and let me borrow their adapter for the one night I was there which was great.

  • Nice hotel with good location – Maureen from United States – July 12, 2025 (9/10)

    Great location.

What could be improved: Very small room. Not much storage or anything.

  • Perfect location – Øyvind from Norway – July 7, 2025 (8/10)

Extremely good location, restaurants and market right outside of the door to the hotel. Clean romms, sound proofed windows.

What could be improved: There was no AC in the room, but a fan was in the room, and it was ok. This was during a heatwave.

  • Great location, charming building, helpful staff – Susan from United States – June 28, 2025 (8/10)

The location is superb. On the afternoon of my arrival, a party with guests in Bavarian dress and a full band was in the Biergarten below my window. Perfect!

What could be improved: It was very warm but the window and standing fan cooled the room.

  • Very Good – Charles from Canada – June 27, 2025 (8/10)

    Location

What could be improved: No air conditioning

  • We loved the hotel and it’s location to downtown. Parking wasn’t too far of a walk away although at the parking garage, – Sallyann from Canada – June 19, 2025 (8/10)

    Loved the location

What could be improved: It was noisy and did not have a mini fridge in room. As far as I’m concerned, every room should be equipped with the fridge. And if it isn’t equipped with a fridge, there should be no issue getting large pails or buckets of ice at our will in order to keep our drinks cold in the room. We had difficulty getting ice as the restaurant said they were not associated with the hotel and the hotel desk person said that we could get ice from the restaurant.

I was told by the person on duty at the restaurant that they needed the ice for their customers.
So I went back to the reception at the hotel and said if you can get me a bucket I’ll go out and buy ice at the supermarket. Any other hotel would’ve been able to supply ice easily.

So I recommend that either the rooms be equipped with a fridge that gets nice and cold and not one of those fridges you can barely fit two bottles of water in at the most, or have no issue having decent size ice buckets, and the ability to get ice from the restaurant or maybe the hotel should buy an ice machine and keep it in their office.
I think this is basic customer necessity to be able to keep drinks cold in the room when they get back at night.

  • A pleasant stay Ina fantastic location. – Darlene from United States – June 13, 2025 (9/10)

    The location and helpful staff.

What could be improved: Room was tiny

  • It was a great stay – Lilian from Australia – June 4, 2025 (8/10)

It is close to the old town, so we walked everywhere.
The room was nice and clean.
    Staff were friendly

What could be improved: It was incredible noisy due to the hotel being in a pedestrian area and restaurants and bars where all around you,the room was hot so the windows had to be open all night which made it worth.

  • Wonderful – Asaf from Israel – May 18, 2025 (9/10)

Great location, next to Marienplatz, in a small and quiet street. Clean room.

  • Comfortable hotel in great location for city centre sights. – Trevor from United Kingdom – May 17, 2025 (8/10)

Location excellent on edge of old food market in Munich …. couldn’t have been better! 10 min walk to Marienplatz.
Didn’t have breakfast but was served in good bar area.

What could be improved: Communication with reception staff was a little difficult…. had problem with safe deposit box which was never resolved during 4 night stay! Poor internet; struggled to communicate with taxi for pickup to airport on return journey.
