Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about Hotel Altmünchen by Blattl? The name actually means something here – this place genuinely feels like old Munich, not some tourist’s fantasy version of it. I mean, it’s a solid 3-star spot that doesn’t try to be something it’s not, which honestly is refreshing when you’re dealing with hotels that oversell themselves. The moment you walk in, there’s this authentic Bavarian warmth that hits you – dark wood everywhere, but not in a heavy way, more like your German grandmother’s house if she had really good taste.

The thing about this place is that it gets the balance right between traditional and actually livable. Sure, you’ll find those classic blue and white touches you’d expect, but the rooms are properly updated where it matters (the wifi actually works, the shower has decent pressure). I stayed there during Oktoberfest season – which, let me tell you, is when you really test a hotel’s mettle – and while everywhere else was complete chaos, this place maintained this calm, almost residential feel. The staff genuinely seemed to know what they were doing, not just frantically managing the tourist rush. Check-in was smooth even when I arrived later than planned, and they had this way of making recommendations that felt personal rather than scripted.

What really sold me, though, was how it sits in the city. You’re not stuck in some sterile hotel district – you can actually walk to proper neighborhood spots where locals grab their morning coffee, and the evening sound isn’t just traffic but people heading home from work, kids playing in nearby courtyards. The building itself has character without being creaky (well, the floors do creak a bit, but in a charming way). Parking can be a bit tricky – Munich’s like that – but they’ll point you toward spots that actually work rather than just shrugging. For an 8-rated hotel, it delivers on that promise. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re staying in Munich rather than just sleeping there, if that makes sense. Nothing fancy, just genuinely well-done and honest about what it offers.

Reviews

  • Gary from Australia – 24 May 2025 (9/10)

Excellent location made it easy to walk to see the best of Munich. Close to transport links. Breakfast was very good and staff extremely friendly and helpful.

What could be improved: Tea and coffee facilities in room would have been nice and a fridge would have been an advantage.

  • Pier from United Kingdom – 21 April 2025 (9/10)

Staff very helpful and friendly, location is near the main attractions of old city and transport links.

  • Yulia from United States – 18 January 2025 (9/10)

    The stay was great!

What could be improved: The only thing I missed was having cappuccino in the morning.

  • Sally from New Zealand – 18 December 2024 (9/10)

Clean & tidy room a short walk from train station & Christmas market. Delicious cinnamon rolls just down the street for breakfast.

  • Julia from South Africa – 17 December 2024 (8/10)

Perfect location. Very central and in walking distance of everything.

What could be improved: It was very expensive. I assume that's because it was over the October Fest time.

  • Ben from United States – 12 December 2024 (8/10)

    Location and price

What could be improved: Towels. Not enough

  • Min from United Kingdom – 10 December 2024 (9/10)

The staff at Hotel Altmunchen were very accommodating, and the location is amazing for seeing the old town. and we were able to get into our room early, which was great after a long day of travelling. Our bed was really comfortable and the bathroom clean. The breakfast selection was good too and set us up each day. We also really appreciated being able to get a beer at the end of each day.

What could be improved: Everything was really good, the only thing that would have been a bonus would have been if there was a kettle in the room, I know I could have asked for a cup of tea at anytime, but I like an early morning cup when I'm in my pyjamas!

  • Jonathan from Canada – 4 December 2024 (9/10)

Hotel location is just around the corner from a small Christmas market. The rooms are a perfect size and the staff were very helpful. If you ate headed to Munich for Christmas markets, I would highly recommend this hotel.

What could be improved: Onsite breakfast was a little pricey. So we went to the local coffee shops. Of which there are lots.

  • Elizabeth from Canada – 3 December 2024 (9/10)

Close to everything. Not very far from the train station.. Was quiet. Breakfast was quite delicious

What could be improved: I could only think a little less expensive breakfast for guests.

  • Nicole from United States – 2 December 2024 (8/10)

Location was great. Closed to city center. Staff were nice, especially the mature lady (sorry I didn’t get her name) super nice, friendly, kind and helpful.

What could be improved: The heater in the room didn’t work well at night and kicked in strong in the morning, which we didn’t needed it.
