What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night – Au-Haidhausen has this residential feel once the sun goes down, but during the day there’s actually quite a bit of life with proper cafes and that authentic Munich vibe you don’t get near the Hauptbahnhof.

The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star Holiday Inn, but they’ve clearly put effort into keeping everything fresh and functional. The beds are genuinely comfortable (I’m picky about this), and the bathrooms are spacious enough that you don’t feel like you’re getting ready in an airplane lavatory. The staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood when I asked about dinner recommendations, pointing me toward some spots on Rosenheimer Straße that I never would have found otherwise. One small thing that bugged me was the air conditioning – it’s there, but in typical European fashion, it’s not the arctic blast Americans might expect during summer months. The breakfast was decent, nothing spectacular but filling enough before a day of wandering around Munich’s beer gardens. What really sold me on the place was stepping outside and realizing I was in actual Munich, not tourist Munich – there’s a difference, and if you’ve spent time in the city, you’ll know exactly what I mean.
