Hotel Description

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked into the Augusten Hotel München, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? Sometimes those assumptions just bite you in the ass. This place actually has character, which is more than I can say for half the sterile chain hotels scattered around Munich.

The thing that struck me right away was how the staff seemed to genuinely give a damn. Check-in was smooth – no weird upselling tactics or that fake corporate smile you get elsewhere. The lobby’s got this lived-in feel, sort of like staying at your well-traveled aunt’s house if she had good taste in furniture. It’s not flashy, but everything feels intentional. The rooms are clean and surprisingly quiet, which honestly shocked me given that Munich can get pretty rowdy, especially during festival season. I mean, you’re still going to hear some street noise if you’re a light sleeper, but it’s not like you’re camping next to the Autobahn.

What really won me over was the location – and I don’t mean that in the generic “convenient location” bullshit way. You’re actually positioned where you can walk to the real Munich, not just the tourist traps around Marienplatz. There’s this fantastic bakery about two blocks away that locals hit up for morning coffee (trust me, skip the hotel breakfast and go there instead), and you’re close enough to hop on the U-Bahn without the insane crowds you get staying right in the city center. The neighborhood has that authentic German residential vibe during the day, then comes alive in the evenings when people are heading out to dinner.

Here’s the thing though – this isn’t a luxury experience, and the hotel doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not. The WiFi works, the shower has decent pressure, and the beds are actually comfortable (I’m picky about mattresses). But you’re not getting a spa or room service or someone to carry your bags. It’s more like… well, it’s what a good 3-star hotel should be. Reliable, clean, staffed by people who know what they’re doing. That 8.2 rating makes total sense to me – it’s scoring points for doing the fundamentals really well, not for having a rooftop infinity pool.

If you’re the type who needs everything to be Instagram-perfect, this probably isn’t your spot. But if you want a solid base for exploring Munich without paying tourist prices, and you appreciate places that feel like actual humans run them, the Augusten delivers. I’ve stayed there twice now, which pretty much tells you everything you need to know.

Reviews

  • Nicholas from United Kingdom – 15 May 2025 (9/10)

    Central location, comfortable room

What could be improved: Nothing – all fine

  • Matteo from United Kingdom – 12 May 2025 (8/10)

Great helpful and nice staff. Clean and great facilities.

What could be improved: The place is quiet, but you can hear the trams passing by

  • William from United States – 7 May 2025 (9/10)

    The room layout

Staff was exceptionally helpful and friendly

  • Maria from United Kingdom – 4 May 2025 (9/10)

Quiet good location. Very confortable. All what a need for a solo traveller.

What could be improved: Not kettle for tea or coffee in the room but not big issue. It might say that in summer the room can get very hot and no AC available just a fan. The tram pass near and some people might find it annoyed, I was ok for me. Just need the room for sleeping.

  • Lloyd from United States – 30 April 2025 (8/10)

Good value and about 20 minutes walk to areas of interest.

What could be improved: The tram, which is convenient to the hotel, is loud if you are a light sleeper.

  • Steven from United States – 30 April 2025 (8/10)

Good location, very clean and updated room, friendly staff.

What could be improved: Our room was on the west side of the building over a main street. The Sun in the afternoon made the room stay too warm. The bigger problem was the street noise. The light rail rumbles by or stops about every 10-15 minutes for almost 24 hours, but worse was the loud voices talking and arguing until 3-4 am every night.

If we had a room away from the street I think I would have rated it as excellent.

  • Gary from Australia – 29 April 2025 (8/10)

I stayed here last year and I’m staying again at the end of this trip.
It’s in a really good location close to the train station and close to several really good museums.
    The breakfast is excellent .

What could be improved: Well the room is very small

  • Pasquale from United Kingdom – 28 April 2025 (8/10)

Location very central 5 mins walk from main railway station
    Spotlessly clean
    Quite location

What could be improved: Grumpy staff

  • Jeremy from United Kingdom – 21 April 2025 (8/10)

Good location, large and clean room

What could be improved: Would have rated higher, but two mornings without hot water and no notification or offer of compensation by hotel, I know things break, even at well run hotels, but would have expected more communication and an offer of partial refund or something. Location is good, but trams outside are quite loud.

  • Cindy from New Zealand – 15 April 2025 (9/10)

Our room was very comfortable and very clean and light. Staff were welcoming and friendly. Great position for the train station and for walking into the central city area.

What could be improved: Our room was on the street side so quite noisy overnight but we chose to leave the window open and closing it would have been quieter.
